Pippa Mann’s gamble of basing herself in Indianapolis over the winter has paid off after she landed herself one of the plum seats for next year’s Indy Lights campaign.
Pippa Mann is about to embark on a second test with Sam Schmidt Motorsports in her quest for an Indy Lights seat for next year.
On the day of our interview, Pippa Mann is sitting in her new Indianapolis apartment waiting for her furniture to arrive. Surrounded by packing boxes, she is taking time out from the tasks of sorting through them to speak to us, before making a return to her demanding fitness regime.
On June 20th this year Pippa Mann lined up with the rest of the Indy Lights field for the Miller Lite 100 at the Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa, little knowing that she would end the race with her car upside-down on the track as rivals shot past at near full speed just feet away. Asked by BritsOnPole to talk us through what happened, she replied in such detail that we thought it worth publishing her answer in full.
“Going out to do a qualifying run on one of the ovals is, to me, one of the most special sensations out there,” says Indy Lights driver Pippa Mann. “When a car’s absolutely right on an oval it’s mega.”
Mario Romancini won the final Indy Lights race of 2009 with a last-gasp lunge for the line to snatch victory from champion-elect JR Hildebrand in the second-closest finish in the history of the series.
A quiet weekend in European racing allows attention to switch to the other side of the Atlantic – where no fewer than four open-wheel series all have their final races.
J.R. Hildebrand was confirmed as the 2009 Indy Lights champion during a fast-paced and closely fought Chicagoland 100 in which all the cars on the lead lap finished within three quarters of a second of each other.
JR Hildebrand ran away with the Carneros Indy 100 at the Infineon Raceway while his team-mate Sebastian Saavedra, sent to the back as penalty for an engine change, carved through the field to finish seventh.
