IndyCar: Kanaan, Franchitti head Kentucky qualifying

Dario Franchitti, fresh from an airborne excursion in his last race and looking to hold off a surging Tony Kanaan, could only qualify in second place behind his rival for the Meijer Indy 300 at the Kentucky Speedway.

The Scot leads the IndyCar series by 24 points but third-placed Kanaan, who qualified 0.14 seconds ahead of him on pole, has momentum after his victory at the Michigan International Speedway.

Franchitti exited that race in a seven car crash caused when Dan Wheldon attempted to overtake him. Wheldon starts from the third row, having set the fifth-fastest time. Darren Manning starts from the back row.
