F1: Rumour mill sends Coulthard to Renault

,

David Coulthard could see out the rest of the F1 season partnering Fernando Alonso at Renault before retiring, according to a strange and rather silly rumour doing the rounds.

Someone with too much time on their hands at the Swiss publication Motorsport Aktuell has taken a whole raft of existing speculation and joined the dots to make a pretty pattern that is supposed to kick in after the Canadian Grand Prix.

In it, Sebastian Vettel would move to Red Bull and further his development as a driver by taking Coulthard’s seat. Nelson Piquet Jr would go to Toro Rosso instead of Vettel, to allow him to get his head straight in a lower-pressure environment.

And Coulthard would meekly replace Piquet at Renault, to wind down his career as Fernando Alonso’s rear gunner.

It certainly has the benefit of being neat and tidy, what with Renault being Red Bull’s engine supplier and all. And it would probably benefit the two younger drivers in the medium-to-long term.

But will it happen?

Let’s just say we’re not holding our breath…
