F1: Hamilton hits Delhi for six

It’s good news for racing fans that Lewis Hamilton took up karting and progressed to become a top F1 driver. His sporting CV as a youngster also included cricket and football, both careers he has said he would have considered had the racing not worked out.

The McLaren ace showed off his batting skills recently during a fun cricket match for Indian fans who are mad about the sport during a promotional tour of Delhi, with India working towards hosting its first F1 race in 2011.

Among the destinations on his itinerary were the Rohini Amusement Park, in the north-west of the city, which includes a shopping mall, Adventure Island and and a water park. He also visited the luxury Burkhara ITC Maurya hotel and restaurant to dine in the evening alongside Indian international cricketer Yuvraj Singh.

When asked about racing in the country, Hamilton joked: “I’ve seen the drivers in Delhi, they’ll be really competitive on the racetrack.”

It was his second visit to India, although his first to Delhi and the driver said he was disappointed not to be able to make time for a visit to the Taj Mahal at Agra. He said he intended to return and complete his ambition of seeing the monument as soon as he could.
