F1: McLaren reveals the cause of Kovalainen’s crash

Heikki Kovalainen’s heavy crash into the tyre wall during the Barcelona Grand Prix was the result of a lacquering process incorrectly applied to a wheel, which caused it to move apart and pitch his car off the racetrack at nearly 150 miles per hour.
That’s the conclusion of an exhaustive investigation carried out by the team and its wheel supplier, according to F1 news discussion site Forumula1.net.
Its story quotes McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh as saying: “We now thoroughly understand how the failure occurred; not, as was originally reported, as a result of a wheel failure but by the incorrect application of a lacquering process which was beyond the control of our wheel supplier.”
