The Brits on Pole All-Star League

McLaren’s second consecutive 1-2 finish has allowed Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button to open up a gap at the top of the All-Star League ahead of last year’s winner Dario Franchitti.

Both have scored points in seven of the eight races this season, with the 11-point gap between them largely accounted for by Button’s seventh place in the season opener.

Points in the All-Star League are awarded for top-eight finishes, and are then modified to reflect length of season and strength of opposition.

Notes

* Superleague performances are weighted based on a 24-race season, according to the schedule issued by the series. However, two dates remain provisional – if one or either does not go ahead, scores will be recalculated based on a 20- or 22-race season, and will increase.

This season we’re sticking with the same points system that worked well last year, and which was based on what Formula One did at the time – 10 for a win down to one for eighth. We multiply that by 10 for starters, and then start applying modifiers.

First, we amend it based on number of races in a season. There are 30 this year in British F3 but probably only 12 in Auto GP. Obviously, it’s not fair for both to be worth 100 points for a win.

So we’ve standardised everything as if each series ran 18 races. Championships with fewer earn more points per race, those with more earn less, but a driver who wins every race in their season should end up with about the same whichever series they’re in.

Then we’ve banded the series by strength. Beating the Star Mazda field is not quite the achievement that beating the F1 field is. F1 and IndyCars count for full points. F2, GP2, Superleague and Indy Lights count for two-thirds. Everything else counts half.

So if you’re in IndyCars (17-race season, strong opposition) you get a shed-load of points for finishing in the top eight, while if you’re in British F3 (lots of races, weaker opposition) you get very few.

This table shows the points available in each series, with their number of races, points co-efficient and weighting.

That’s a great idea! I’m not sure I agree with the F1/IRL equivalence, but a cool way to keep track of how they’re all doing.

Does ram home how much Conway is struggling in the IRL, though. Another crash last night. Hope he gets it all together.

    Andy says:

I think he’s visibly improving – Iowa was a good race for him, he’s qualifying better, and of course Indy wasn’t too bad once he actually got into the race. Last night’s mistake was a real IRL rookie’s one, not knowing the extent to which one oval might have a couple of safe racing lines and another might be single-track traffic only. That’s the sort of thing he’ll learn, if he lasts long enough.

    David says:

Why is Superleague Formula not included in this list? It’s one of the biggest racing formulae and features one of Britain’s best rising stars: Craig Dolby.

    Andy says:

Well, like it says in the note at the end we left it out because it’s supposed to be team vs team and last year drivers were swapped in and out of some of the cars quite a bit.

But I was actually talking to Craig and some of the other drivers at a Superleague Formula media event yesterday, and discussed this league and how it works with some of them, and I’m now trying to think about how to integrate them into it.

Superleague Formula is only 12 races, which isn’t a lot, but the same is true of the Atlantics where James Winslow is racing. The main problem is working out how to handicap it – it’s certainly not on a level with F1, but when you have ex-F1 drivers in there it’s none too shabby either. I’ll figure it out.

Oh – and watch out over the next couple of days, we’ve got plenty of Superleague Formula coverage coming up, including photos and an interview with Craig.

    ConcedoNulli says:

No A1GP? Adam Carroll (Northern Ireland) would have a shed load of points from that!

  6. 6
    Andy says:

He would have done – probably led it – and Danny Watts would have had a few too, but it’s just impossible to fit A1GP in with everything else because it’s at such a different part of the year. Should the season that just finished count for this year? Or should it count for last year and the new season count for this one? Or should it be for 2009 calendar year races only, so the second half of last season and the first half of next season get included? It just can’t be done. Believe me, I tried!
