So, you’ve stocked up on food and booze, set the alarm clock (or planned to stay up through the night) and you’re all set for a hopefully thrilling season opener in Melbourne. Who are the runners, riders and also-rans for the coming season, and who will you be backing for the drivers’ and constructors’ championships? Here’s our take on the proceedings
11 Mar 2008: F1: McLaren teamcast talks up Hamilton’s prospects
Now, we know it won’t exactly set the world of Formula One on fire to learn that Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen are the best of friends going into the 2008 season. Or that the team believes Hamilton can handle the pressure of competing at the very top of the sport. But, nevertheless, McLaren’s official teamcast, issued on the eve of the Australian Grand Prix, does make for interesting viewing for anyone interested in the prospects of these two drivers.
Just don’t expect any hot news on Ron’s retirement.

The Australian Grand Prix isn’t the only motorsport event on this weekend, you know. While you’re dragging yourself out of bed to fall in front of the telly at silly o’clock, there’ll be a tense title fight taking place in Mexico City.

But, as the week went on, the stories predicting his resignation hardened up considerably, until it became very difficult to preserve the view that Ron intends to stay at the McLaren helm for very much longer.
